Why Maintain Your Furnace?

The single most important maintenance task that any homeowner can perform is to check and change any and all air filters in your heating and cooling system on a regular basis.

Most experts and manufacturers agree that this be done monthly. And remember, the first part of this recommendation is to check the filter and then replace it only if necessary.
If you have a larger, cartridge type media air filter such as a TRION “Air Bear”, a SPACEGUARD 2200, 2250, or 2400, SKUTTLE, PUROLATOR, GENERAL, AIR SPONGE, etc. which can cost anywhere from $25 to $45 each, you can see why this is an important distinction. And these larger, much more efficient air filters may only need to be changed twice or even once a year.
And don't think that if you have an electronic type air cleaner (TRION, HONEYWELL, APRILAIRE, GENERAL AIRE, etc.) that you are off the hook with regard to maintenance. You can simply change the wording from “check and change” to "check and clean."
The irony is that filter maintenance is the simplest and cheapest form of up keep that any individual can perform and yet by far the most neglected and most damaging to the overall performance and life span of a furnace or air handler.

Remember: Your filter can never be TOO clean.
